Agriculture makes up the largest segment of the economy. Crops are limited to those requiring a shorter growing season as the average season ranges from 80 days in Enterprise to 120 days in the Imnaha River Valley. Major crops include barley, wheat and alfalfa as well as grass hay. Livestock production includes Cattle, Sheep and American Bison.
Recreation is the fastest growing industry in the area. Referred to as, “The Little Switzerland of America”. Wallowa Lake is the second in clarity only to Crater Lake. Wallowa County is the gateway to Hells Canyon Recreation Area, Eagle Cap Wilderness Area and Wallowa Lake, where you can find the steepest four passenger gondola ride in the United States. Each season brings many choices in outdoor recreation. The area is known for it's powder snow, attracting downhill, cross-country, alpine and snowshoers alike. Salt Creek Summit, 18 miles east of Joseph offers access to over 175 miles of designated snowmobile trails and approximately 20 miles of cross-country ski trails.
Art and the Artist’s community is Wallowa County’s newest industry. Supported by bronze foundries in Joseph and Enterprise, sculptures are the most popular art forms found. But don’t overlook our painting and pottery artists to name a few. See more at Joseph Oregon Artists.
