Wallowa County farming and ranching, like anywhere in the country, depends on weather, water and good ground.
Because this county varies in elevation by almost 10,00', the crops and animals that can be raised varies by location.
While Imnaha is warm enough to grow and raise almost anything, lots of the county is either too cold, high or dry and is only suitable only for grazing, timber or recreation.
The central valley between Wallowa and Joseph is blessed with meandering mountain streams and a well developed series of water ditches. Combined with rich black soils, the production of grain and hay is a rewarding endeavor for some of the area farmers. Between them and the cattle and sheep ranchers, agriculture makes up the largest portion of the economy.
