The Imnaha Country is a stunning, majestic , wild country that hasn't changed since first discovered by man. From its steep rugged canyon floors with winding rivers to the spectacular rims about a mile above, this is a hunting and fishing paradise. Old time cowboys know the secrets of trailing cattle from their winter homes at the bottom to their summer range out on top. But this country isn't for the faint of heart. Take a ride out to Buckhorn Look out, or Hat Point where you can climb a lookout station, to get some spectacular pictures and views of the canyons. And get some idea of depth and range of it.
You may see bighorn sheep down river from Imnaha, as well as elk, deer, bear, and cougar. The fishing is excellent, and 40 inch Salmon aren’t uncommon. Dollyvarden and rainbow trout abound. If you hop over to the Snake River at Dug Bar, you’ll find bass, Steelhead, sturgeon and cat fish.
Bird hunters will enjoy Grouse, Ruffs, Blues, Chukar, Huns and Quail, as well as spring Turkey.
Imnaha is an unincorporated community 30 miles east of Joseph at the confluence of the Imnaha River and Little Sheep Creek. There are about 175 people living in the area, with only about a dozen living in the town proper.
The town boasts its own small post office established in 1885. The Imnaha Tavern & Store, a three room motel with a 4 space RV park, a two room elementary school and the Imnaha Christian Fellowship Church.
Downriver, about five miles you will find the charming Imnaha River Inn, run by Nick and Sandy Vidan. This 7,000 square foot lodge keeps the rustic feel of the country while providing a luxurious stay.
This is an area full of local history. Stop in the quaint little town of Imnaha and visit the Imnaha Store & Tavern, where you might be served gizzards with a mug of beer while you are trying to stick your dollar bills to the ceiling.
There are usually several nice properties for sale in this area, as well as upriver at Imnaha River Woods, that would make excellent hunting and fishing base camps. And if you like to camp, lots for sale at River Woods are very reasonably priced. (although not buildable)
