The pristine little town of Joseph (pop. 1100, elev 4200') lies below the towering snowcapped Wallowa Mountains near beautiful Wallowa Lake. Joseph is trendy yet quaint, with cobblestone sidewalks and many western storefronts. You’ll want to stroll down Main Street looking for hidden treasures inside the many shops and galleries while enjoying the colorful flower boxes, or you might just want to rest on a log bench while enjoying the gorgeous views and life size bronzes scattered along Main Street.
Joseph is well known for its bronze foundries and the Chief Joseph Days Rodeo the last full weekend in July each year, as well as the stunning beauty of the area.
Although Joseph has developed into a popular destination for tourism and recreational activities, including fishing, hiking, hunting, boating, horseback riding, water & snow skiing and snowmobiling to name a few, it has retained its cowboy heritage.
You might see a real working cowboy ride into town, tie his horse to a hitching post or tree, then saunter into a local restaurant to have lunch with friends, or you could discover that you are in one of our infrequent traffic jams when you find yourself in the middle of a cattle drive down one of our county roads.
The pace here is slower and our county has yet to see its first stoplight. Our people are friendly and quick to help those in need. You’ll still find barn raisings and neighbors helping neighbors.
The charming town of Joseph is blessed not only with the stunning Wallowa Mountains for a back drop, they are fortunate to have extraordinary local artists whose life size bronzes grace Main Street.
If you are feeling the urge to be pampered you can indulge yourself in a massage, pedicure, manicure or new haircut in one of Joseph’s fine salons. Lodging, restaurants, groceries and gasoline are also available, and Joseph has a lively nightlife with several pubs, bars, and a bowling alley.
Do you want more information on Joseph Oregon History and Wallowa County? You could spend the afternoon at the Wallowa County Museum on Main Street, Joseph. They have many photographs and exhibits to bring the past alive.
