Wallowa was named for the mountains, the valley and the river. It was always called Wallowa by the Nez Perce Indians who lived here. This was a great fishing area and the Nez Perce called it Wallowa after the “wallowa” which was part of their willow fishing Traps.
This little town is located in a fertile green valley with streams meandering thru it. Like most of our towns it sets at the mouth of a canyon leading into the Wallowa Mountains, abundant with many verities of wildlife and fish. The nearest trailhead is only moments away for your hiking and horseback riding pleasure.
For a small town, Wallowa has an active economic-growth team and city council. This is a very family oriented town, with an excellent school. The Wallowa History Center is located here and houses historical artifacts from Lostine, Troy, Flora, Promise, Maxwell, Bartlett and Wallowa areas.
Wallowa is also home to the annual Tamkaliks Native American Celebration and the Nez Perce Trail Interpretive Center. The Tamkaliks hold their celebration with a potluck feast of salmon and game meats served by Native Americans, with dancing a parade and much more.
There are several fun restaurants, gift shops, and a nice motel as well as an RV park just outside of town. Don’t forget their big 4th of July bash.
